Men’s Style Guide | Fashion Icon: A$AP ROCKY

For many people, a large part of modern fashion and dressing fashionably is wearing clothing that is considered “cool,” or on trend. This leads to the inevitable question of, how does one determine what is in fact trendy clothing? While there are many different ways people come to the conclusion of what is on trend, one of the most common ways is following and emulating how celebrities dress and are styled. This has always been the case, but in the age of social media that currently exists, this is now truer than ever. The influence of these individuals has become so profound that some are now deemed “tastemakers” or “influencers,” which refer to their ability to influence what fashion is currently considered “cool,” by their personal tastes. One of the most prominent male influencers is the musician A$AP ROCKY, who is as well known for his style and fashion sense as he is for his music.

Rocky broke into the music scene with his debut mixtape “Live. Love. A$AP.” which was an instant hit and immediately vaulted him into the public eye. Upon becoming a notable public figure, Rocky’s fashion sense became instantly noticeable and it was not long before he began setting trends. As his fame continued to grow, so too did his influence. In many ways, Rocky’s rise to prominence directly coincided with the sartorial shift that occurred in the rap industry as baggy clothes quickly became outdated and were replaced with a more tailored look.

By the time Rocky released his first proper studio album “Long. Live. A$AP” his reputation as a fashion influencer had been firmly established. In fact, his fashion sense had become so synonymous with his persona that one of the larger singles featured on this album was titled “Fashion Killa.” The lyrics to this song embrace the sense of style that Rocky had become known for as he name drops a handful of designer brands and labels throughout the track. Rocky then truly drives the point home with the video which features female fashion influencer and fellow musician Rihanna.

Rocky has also made the transition from influencer to creator as he has worked on multiple fashion lines over the last few years. While it is very common for musicians to create their own clothing line as a form of marketing, Rocky put significantly more effort and thought into it than the average musician. A clear sign of this was his choice to collaborate with famous designer Raf Simmons when working on his own signature A$AP clothing line. Beyond this, Rocky also made a big splash in the fashion world when he teamed up with the company Guess to release a limited collection of items inspired by his personal taste and style.
