Tips & Trends | How to Rock an All Black Outfit

Chic and timeless are a couple of words that come to mind when describing an all black outfit. It is perhaps one of the most underrated ensembles, and possibly one of the most scrutinized. For those of us who have been reprimanded for sporting the head-to-toe look on the daily, we are certainly not oblivious to the stereotypical remarks from others such as ‘are you depressed?’, ‘are you gothic?’, or our personal favourite, ‘are you attending a funeral?’. What’s worse, wearing an all black outfit seems to give others the opportunity to assume that we are simply suffering from fashion boredom or are just plain lazy when putting together an outfit. However, there is absolutely nothing wrong with rocking the monochromatic look; in fact, your fashion game is probably more on point than most.

So what exactly are the advantages of an all black outfit? Besides it being completely timeless and effortlessly chic, it is also undeniably edgy. It doesn’t matter if it’s covered in frills and polka-dots – the fact that it’s black makes a statement all on it’s own. In addition, an all black outfit means that you will constantly look polished, not to mention dressed for any occasion – everyone is bound to take you a little more seriously. Another plus? Rocking an all black outfit can be very cost-savvy and can look expensive, no matter the price point.

Nevertheless, show up in an all black outfit and you’re bound to be the best-dressed person in the room. Follow the tips below, and we guarantee that you will look sensational!

It’s all about texture and details…

What makes an all black outfit truly come to life is texture and details – we’re talking faux fur, sequins, mesh, you name it. In a way, you can get away with a lot more in an all black color palette: sequins look glamorous rather than gaudy, mesh looks edgy and not provocative, and leather provides the ultimate edge.

Hint: try and stay away from wearing one single fabric as it can look sloppy and dowdy really easily – not to mention, slightly over-kill.

Mix and contrast…

Don’t worry, we’re still sticking with the all black trend for this tip. We’re talking, the mixing and contrasting of silhouettes such as structured vs. relaxed, and the mixing and contrasting of textures and detailing. Don’t be afraid to mix satin with leather or sequins with lace – the more contrast the better. Also, don’t worry about matching your blacks to a tee; different shades of black make for a great contrasting look as well.

Be conscious of accessories…

When you’re wearing all black, you don’t need to worry about the clashing of patterns or colours, which means you can have as much fun as you want when it comes to the accessories. Whether it’s a piece of statement jewelry, a structured bag, or even some crazy sunglasses, an all black outfit provides the perfect canvas for any type of accessory.

Invest in statement pieces…

The perfect black faux fur coat, a classic motorcycle jacket, or a structured black bag are all great pieces to invest in and add to your wardrobe. These are essentials for your entire wardrobe and can make any simple outfit come to life, plus the fact that they’re all black means that they will never go out of style and will provide to be multi-functional and practical for years to come.

As Wednesday Addams once said, “I’ll stop wearing black when they make a darker colour” – we couldn’t agree more.

Do you guys approve of this ‘all black’ mantra? Or, do you already live by it?
