Men’s Style Guide | How to Suit Yourself: Tips for a Perfect Fitting Suit

A well-tailored suit can take you places. You can go from the office, to the club, to the red carpet and look like a star all the way through. But, you don’t have to wear Armani to look like a million bucks; all you need is a perfect fitting suit, with the right details and accessories to be the man of the hour (Or day. Or year).

Bad Fit, Not a Hit

For a perfect fitting suit, ill-fitting, sloppy shoulders and frumpy waistlines are a major no-go. You need to take your suit seriously if you want to be taken as such, so find one that suits you (pun definitely intended). Make friends with your local haberdasher to get your perfect fit. Having a professional look over what shapes and seams fit your body best can make an old suit go from 0 to 100 really quick – just ask Drake:

Slacking off

Slacking off with your slacks gives off the impression of carelessness. Take time to find a pair of pants that hug you right and stick with it. Maybe get two pairs, or in multiple materials to keep your options open. And don’t forget to get the length tailored! Not doing so will take away any of your suit-wearing credibility.

Details

From the cufflinks to the thread of the seams, it’s the details that determine the crispness of a suit. To avoid monotony, especially in a three-piece suit, mix colors, textures and patterns to create a sense of richness. Clean cuts, bespoke inseams and quality materials are simple, yet define a good suit. To keep it modern, go for a skinny black tie. Or, a jewel-toned bowtie adds a surprising pop without being overwhelming. You could also go completely tieless, with the top button undone for a sexy European look.

Shoes

Along with a perfect fitting suit, keep your look grounded with a brown or black brogue. An elegantly crafted dress shoe, polished and shining, ties a look together. A simple pair with a pointed toe and soft leather is a great investment piece because they go with everything, can be dressed up or down, and will last many wears. A brown brogue with intricate details and handmade stitching does just the same.

Finally, it’s important to remember to incorporate your personal touch. It’s easy to lose yourself in Harry Rosen by mimicking mannequin ensembles and being a catalogue copy. Tom Ford once said that he doesn’t like seeing people wearing his clothes the way it was presented on the runway, and much prefers when they incorporate his fashion with their own sense of style. To avoid “just buying a look,” as Tom Ford has put it, find a style that speaks to you, and put yourself in the details. Surprise people by adding your own flair and don’t forget that real style is self-expression, not conformity.
