Men’s Style Guide | Men’s Fashion in Tokyo

A couple weeks ago, I came home from a trip to Japan and everything about it is simply incredible. From the food to the culture, to the fashion… everything was breathtaking. There was specifically one place I loved for fashion: the crosswalk square in Shibuya. Everywhere I walked, there was a different type of fashion that I have never seen men pull off before. There was a building with 10 floors full of men’s clothing and each sold a trend completely different from the other! Some trends I can see slowly becoming a trend here in Toronto, but we will probably take some time to catch up.

Take a look at a few fashion trends that I spotted and believe is up and coming, here in Toronto!

Shorts Over Tights

In the middle of Shibuya, I saw a gentleman wear this with a white hoodie and a bomber jacket. It looked both comfortable and fashionable. Not sure where he was heading but it looked like he was just in the city shopping for the day. At the moment, I see this trend more so in the gym rather than on the streets, but I do believe this is a trend that could pick up here in Toronto, sooner rather than later.

Bomber Jackets

Bomber jackets in Toronto are continuing to be a trend but they are not worn the same way as the way Japanese men wear it. Most of the jackets seen in Tokyo had some sort of animal design on the back. It may seem cliché for Asian fashion to have a tigers, pandas or even cherry blossoms on their jacket, but it is a bold move that really shows off Japanese culture. I believe bomber jackets will continue to be a trend going forward but in terms of the animal designs on the back, I think that will remain within Japanese fashion culture. Not to say that Toronto is not as bold, but Japanese cherry flowers and cute pandas are not really part of our culture. But who knows? Maybe we will see more bomber jackets with a maple leaf at the back.

Punk

This was a look that I was not entirely a fan of but saw quite a bit in the middle of Shibuya. The punk rock look is popular in Toronto, but Japan takes it to a completely different level. The theme is essentially black items of clothing with black eyeliner. Some men wear kilted skirts, others wear baggy pants with chain accessories. For those of you rocking this “punk” look now, you are just scratching the surface! It is time to step up your fashion trend and try what these men are wearing!

Oversized Military Jacket

I absolutely loved this jacket. It looked very warm in the cool spring breeze and very fashionable with dark jeans and boots. It is slowly becoming a trend with Canada Goose jackets and Parajumpers in the same size as these jackets, just not the length. Sooner or later, this trend will catch on in Toronto and I will be the first one to say I told you so!

Blazers & Printed T-shirts

I saved the best for last. My favourite trend is seeing men wear a light blue or light grey blazer with a patterned or graphic t-shirt and jeans. Whether it was during the day or night, this was the most recurring trend I spotted while shopping, exploring or drinking my Kirin beer at dinner. I think this will be a trend that will surface in Toronto within the next few years!

In my past few blogs, I have mentioned many times that it is all about the details for men’s fashion, but Japanese fashion takes details to another level.

From printed patterns to colourful accessories, to extremely fitted blazers, they are all about the details. There are some trends that I cannot wait to hit Toronto, but others I think are a fad and will lose its popularity in Japan.
