Tips & Trends | Styling Sweatpants – a Guide to Looking Chic

Share via:

Sweatpants are the ultimate choice for comfort, but they aren’t always easy to style. Aside from throwing them on for your 8AM class or a quick run to the post office, sweatpants are also great at the office, or for a night out! If you’re wondering how to style your sweatpants outfits to look chic, keep reading.

1. Fit

The first thing to styling sweatpants is getting a great pair that fit well. We’re looking for the sweats that have a drawstring waist, taper slightly, and feature a ribbed ankle. The taper is important in helping your outfit look put-together. Pants that don’t hug your legs can tend to look sloppy. A pant in a solid black or grey is more appropriate for the office, while salt & pepper sweats may come off a little too casual. Trust us and find a good pair of pants first – it will be easier to style this way!

2. Structure

Because of the nature of the sweatpants, we recommend styling them with something a little more structured on top. You can wear a t-shirt to accompany your sweats, but blazers or leather jackets are wonderful at contrasting the casual look. Otherwise, try a top that is made of very structured fabric (read: stiffer and thicker). Styling sweatpants is all about making them look less casual, so contrast them with more luxurious-looking fabrics and you will be good to go!

3. Texture

Your sweats may appear very casual, like you’re about to binge-watch Netflix for 8 hours straight. To avoid this look, the rest of your outfit should avoid the same fabric. Chiffon is great for the office, and leather is perfect for a night out! If you are willing to sacrifice the comfort of traditional fleece sweats, experiment with different fabrics! Try a pleather pant or denim joggers! They are a switch-up from the traditional cuts that we see in these fabrics, so you are sure to stand out (in a good way!).

4. The Heel

Don’t underestimate the power of a great heel. High heels will elongate your legs and add a touch of formality – depending on the style you choose. Heels that show a little skin work best when styling sweats, but sneaker wedges are perfect for more casual days. Perhaps pointed-toe pumps for the office, and a patent, chunky heel for a night out! Check out the Designer Swap website for some luxury online shopping – you’ll be sure to find pre-owned designer heels for any occasion.

5. Accessorize!

The thing that is typically missing from a quickly thrown together, had-2-minutes-to-get-dressed look is an accessory. If you spend time putting together accessories that complement your outfit, you will quickly go from drab to fab! This is typically true when styling any outfit, but especially true when styling sweatpants! A watch or a statement necklace can really elevate the look, making it appear more elegant.
