Tips & Trends | The Best Of New York Fashion Week SS 2018

1. Kaia Gerber

It’s enough that she’s the daughter of the iconic supermodel, Cindy Crawford, but at the age of only 16, New York Fashion Week was Kaia Gerber’s week. She was one busy girl, making her debut on the runway with Calvin Klein, and later walking for the likes of Alexander Wang, Fenty x Puma, Coach, and Marc Jacobs. Literally “walking” in her mother’s footsteps, Kaia is making her way to supermodel status.

2. “Wangfest”

I don’t like hangovers, but I sure would love a “Wangover.” One of the coolest setups in my opinion, the Alexander Wang Spring 2018 Ready-to-Wear Collection show was a highlight for sure. The streets of New York was the runway, how cool? The collection itself had Wang written all over it from the overall aesthetic, to the monochromatic tones. Experimenting with layers and exquisite cuts and tailoring, Wang’s show was a celebration as much as it was a showcase of his newest collection.

3. BAD GAL RIRI

How am I going to recap the best of New York Fashion Week without mentioning the BEST herself? Rihanna does it ALL. Fashion week has been her personal runway…now her vision is ON the runway. Fenty x Puma has proven once again that it is edgy, sporty, girly, sexy, daring and unique…just like the woman behind it all. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, Rihanna says the word and the Fenty x Puma Spring 2018 Collection gets the X Games treatment. This setting was so neat and so very different from anything I’ve ever seen before. I love this approach to Fashion Week. It doesn’t always have to be about walking on a runway. In fact, it’s all about visuals and how you can understand a collection from a different point of view. She came riding in on the back of a motorcycle at the end of the show. You read that correctly. RiRi didn’t come here to play folks, plain and simple. She has taken “Phresh Out the Runway” to the next level by flirting with boundaries and breaking the mold.

4. Body Diversity Featuring Ashley Graham

VA, VA VOOM. My girl Ashley Graham is not here for body shamers or haters. She is the epitome of fearless, not only because of what she stands for but because of how she stands for it. She is shaping (literally) the movement toward a more accepting fashion perspective. Body diversity in the fashion industry is SUCH an important thing. If fashion is for everyone, so should be the runway. Diversity in the fashion world isn’t just a runway show of curvy models showcasing the newest plus size line for Addition Elle (for example) because as wonderful as that is, it’s also about incorporating women of every size in every show for every fashion house! Curvy women, thick women, slim women, thin women…it doesn’t matter what your shape is or how many pounds you carry, we all share the same passion for fashion! We’ve got a long way to go but this New York Fashion Week was definitely a few great steps forward.
