Gucci has been doing well lately, like really well. With some of the best sales in 20 years, Alessandro Michele, the new creative director at the helm, has no doubt been the reason why the brand has seen such a resurgence. Having only worked with the brand for just over two years, Michele has been able to accomplish a lot. Some classic 70s Gucci looks have been brought back; loud prints, bold colours, appliqués and flowing dresses, but he’s also added more casual, streetwear pieces and more accessories. This move – plus dressing “it” celebrities from Rihanna at Coachella, to Harry Styles on Saturday Night Live – has helped attract a younger audience to the brand. Even if they can’t afford some of the pieces Gucci has to offer, there are some they can get now, and when they are ready to invest, they’ll have brand loyalty.
Another aspect surely contributing to their recent successes, is Gucci’s marketing. They have a very active presence on social media, and they even made a whole series of “Gucci Memes” on their Instagram. This clever way of advertising got people talking and other luxury brands will likely follow suit. Hiring highly sought after photographer Petra Collins to shoot a dreamy eyewear campaign for their Milan Fashion Week show helped to bring the feel of the brand alive. They’re young, fun, androgynous, and a little weird. Gucci has essentially become a Millennial dream, and if they can keep standing out, the brand will continue to stay strong for years to come.
