Men’s Style Guide | What We Learned From Men’s Fashion Week

With Men’s Fashion Week in Paris, Milan, and London having come to an end last week, it is only appropriate to discuss what dominated the runways and what men can anticipate to add to their wardrobes this fall. It is just as important for men to be on-top of their fashion game as it is for the leading women in their lives!

With any fashion week, while we are presented with an array of aesthetically pleasing outfits, we are also given the fair share of runway selections that, more often than not, make us second-guess the credibility of certain designers. Luckily for you, we’ve separated the good from the bad and chosen what we think are the best and most practical items, seen on the runways at Men’s Fashion Week, that you can add to your wardrobe this fall.

Fur & Shearling Coats

Yes, you read that right – fur. Although many of you may not be ready to step out in Kanye West fashion and rock a fur coat, a touch of fur isn’t as crazy as you may think. From the runways to the impeccable street style worn by the fashion show attendees, fur was definitely making a big statement at Men’s Fashion Week. However, opting for a coat with a fur trim on the hood or collar is a great way to introduce fur in a subtle and relaxed way, without feeling like you’re starring in an 90’s R&B music video – but then again, what’s so bad about that?

That being said, for any of you who aren’t quite ready to jump on the fur train just yet, shearling may be the way to go. Although some of you may be rolling your eyes at a trend that seems to have come and gone already, don’t be so quick to judge. Not only do fashion trends come and go – and come back again – but they come back fresher with a modern twist. This fall, try and incorporate a bomber coat with a shearling lining or even a heavier trench with a shearling collar and cuffs.

Lace-Up Oxfords & Embellished Loafers

Without a doubt, shoes were all the rage during Men’s Fashion Week as we saw designers such as Comme des Garcons, Dries van Noten, and Prada making a big statement with footwear. It seems as though shoes are one item that go unnoticed in a man’s wardrobe, when in reality, they can really make or break an outfit. In this case a “little goes a long way” is not the rule to follow – more like, “the more the better”. We’re talking studs, texture, prints, embroidery – you name it. Although a classic loafer has always been in-style when it comes to men’s fashion, don’t be afraid to go outside the box. This fall, leave your boring brown leather loafers in the closet and go for something more inspired.

Another shoe that you can add to your wardrobe is a classic oxford. They’re not only meant for the fashionable men walking the streets of London – they’re a great shoe to pair with nearly any outfit, whether it’s with a pair of jeans or a suit. The same rule goes for these shoes – more is more when it comes to embellishments and character.

Baggy Trousers

Before we elaborate more on this trend, lets just put emphasis on the word ‘trousers’ – not jeans – trousers; we can safely say that baggy jeans will not be in-style for the foreseeable future. Although we may regret encouraging men to throw on baggy trousers rather than what we would ultimately prefer – a nice tailored trouser, it has the potential of being fun, and not to mention comfortable, if done properly that is.

To make this look work, try pairing a looser fitting trouser with a good quality sweater, a thin belt with a tucked in shirt, or even a tailored jacket. And if you’re feeling really daring, try a monochromatic colour palette to look incredibly polished.

Patterned Suits

It is highly unlikely that we will see the day when tailored suits are no longer in style; they are perhaps the most defining pieces of clothing that have distinguished men for decades. From Gucci to Pringle of Scotland, suits were reintroduced with a new flare – patterned. Although tartan seemed to dominate the new patterned suit trend, we also saw muted floral prints and snakeskin. Although many of you may not be daring enough to step out in head to toe floral, a neutral toned tartan print is a great first step. We have to say, we are absolutely loving this retro trend and besides, what man doesn’t want to look like Don Draper?
