Men’s Style Guide | Best Dressed at Golden Globes 2017

Share via:

Anh Pham

On January 8, 2017, the 74th Golden Globes commenced and not only was the best actors rewarded but also the best dressed. Fashion changes constantly for women, but men’s fashion moves at a slower pace. I thought it would be interesting to compare the fashion at this year’s Globes, to the fashion from previous years. (See related: Best Dressed Men at the Golden Globes 2015).

From what I have seen, more or less the style is quite similar, but different designers are showcased. I also noticed that actors are taking more of a traditional approach, with less blue suits and more black and white. A truly black tie affair! Take a look at some of my favourite looks.

Matt Bomer

In 2015, Bomer rocked a navy suit, however, he took more of a traditional approach this time, wearing a black and white tuxedo from Giorgio Armani. Along with his suit, he accessorized with a gorgeous Cartier watch, silver cufflinks and Tod’s dress shoes.

Leonardo Di Caprio

For many years, Leo continues to make an impact not only in the movie industry, but in the world. He is an incredible actor that also focuses on environmental sustainability. Between filming and advocating for the environment, I guess he does not have much time to choose different suits! In both 2015 and 2017, he wore the same tuxedo made by Giorgio Armani with a few differences, not to his suit, but to his accessories. This year, he wore a watch to accessorize, but two years ago, Leo wore a bracelet he picked up in Angkor Wat in Cambodia. These red bracelets are given by monks in return for donations. It is a bracelet that is supposed to bring good luck.

Rami Malek

In 2016, Rami wore deep navy Dior suit with a puffed pocket square. This year, he took a change and wore a black and white tuxedo from Dior Homme. We love the mix of finishes in his 3-piece suit, from the satin lapel, the black boutonniere, to the shiny patent shoes. Rami definitely spent a bit more time on detail this year for his suit, which is why this suit is one of my favourites.

John Legend

John stole our heart through his music and he is a heart throb at the golden globes. In 2015, John wore navy tuxedo, and in 2017, he represented Gucci with a black and white ensemble.

Jeremy Renner

In 2015, Renner actually went the complete opposite of the trend. He wore a traditional black and white tuxedo in 2015 and this year, he wore a white blazer with black dress pants from BOSS. He even won an award for the “best fit” suit. He makes a few final touches by complementing his blazer with a simple pocket square fold that contrasts from his pure black suit and pure white suit.

There were many more suits that rocked the red carpet, however these are some of my favourites. In two years, styles have stayed the same, but are also different. Black and white was the theme this year, Gucci was a very popular pick amongst men, and pocket squares were used with almost every suit. Pocket squares at first were just an optional accessory that most millennials wore, however it is now a staple in men’s fashion.

Watching the fashion at the Golden Globes is always one of my favourite times of the year and I am excited to see what next year has in store!
