Tips & Trends | Clash Of the Patterns

Trends are meant to be eye-catching and attention-grabbing. Some come and go, some resurface after decades/eras and some just remain timeless. I am always drawn to what Fashion Week has to offer both on and off the runway. I’m especially captivated by street style during Fashion Week and how it transcends into everyday life. More than ever, the streets are a beautifully painted canvas of setting the tone for what’s to come each season. It’s cool to see how we incorporate certain looks into our daily wardrobe.

After doing some digging, the most common trend executed by fashionistas, style enthusiasts and bloggers alike, etc is mixing patterns. I’m not talking mixing vertical stripes with horizontal stripes either. We’re talking anything and everything goes! The fashion rules book has been missing in action and I don’t think it will be found anytime soon.

Below are some of my favourite looks I have compiled from my research!

What I love most about mixing patterns is how bold it is. It can be difficult to find the perfect patterns to pair with one another. However, the process is nearly full-proof in that you aren’t necessarily looking for a match. It’s really up to you how you want to style this trend giving you full range and control of expression!

Don’t know how to get started? Here are some tips!

  1. Work within the same colour family or complimentary colours (use the colour wheel to help you)
  2. Choose two patterns that share the same colour within it
  3. Wear neutral (or even metallic) shoes and accessories to balance out your look!
  4. Choose two patterns that share the same print (ie: floral)
  5. Add texture to your outfit to break up the prints (ie: a blazer or duster coat)

Happy clashing everyone!
