Tips & Trends | Holiday Style Guide: What to Wear to Your Holiday Party

Its that time of year again, Christmas is around the corner and holiday parties are rolling in. Whether it’s a family function, work party or you and your best gals celebrating the holidays together, one way or another, holiday events can be intimidating. It’s the time of year when everyone goes all out with their style, because let’s be honest, metallic eye shadow and sequence dresses are more acceptable now then ever.

Don’t panic though, if metallics and sparkles aren’t your thing, that’s ok! There are many other ways to look festive while staying classy this holiday season.

Formal

Getting dressed up for a formal party can be seriously fun, yet slightly stressful. It’s not every day that we have the opportunity to go to a formal party so when we search for a dress to buy, it can be a bit of a challenge. Finding a dress that you think you will wear again is a bonus, especially if it’s expensive – we all know formal attire can be a little more on the pricey side!

This year, try staying away from the basic black. Yes, it’s comfortable and versatile but a beautiful emerald green is classy and makes a statement, without being flashy. If you choose gold accessories, stick with gold, a mix of too many metals could clash in this case – plus, gold accents are stunning along side emerald shades. Play it safe with a nude lipstick or be bold with merlot shades, the deep purples will contrast perfectly with an emerald dress and gold accessories. You’ll be the centre of attention at your holiday party – for all the right reasons!

Semi-Formal

Semi-formals are the best kind of parties to dress for, although most women find them the most difficult. There is always the question of, ‘what does semi-formal mean?’ Is it a dress, a skirt, pants? Semi-formals are all of these and more. The beauty of a semi-formal is that you’re not limited, you can rock a dress and booties with a leather jacket and you’re set. If you’re not into a dress for this one, a t-shirt and a skirt is totally appropriate. This might sound too casual but I promise it’s not, the key, my friends, is in the textures.

Dressing for a semi-formal party is a perfect time play with textures and patterns, especially in the winter. Try something like a velvet t-shirt, a beaded skirt and a pair of Christian Louboutin pumps from our DS shop, you’ve instantly dressed up your look from casual to semi-formal. Be cautious of accessories with this look though, considering the bold beading, minimal amounts of jewelry is best, but don’t forget to play up your make up with a cool metallic lip!

Casual

Dressing for a casual holiday party is tricky in my opinion, does casual really exist over the holidays? And we can’t forget that casual doesn’t always mean jeans and a t-shirt. In this case, a little black dress can work its magic, staying classy but not overly dressy. Keep your look casual yet sophisticated by pairing your LBD with over the knee boots, either flat or with a small heel, and simple accessories like a choker necklace. Make sure to skip out on the bold makeup for this one, a soft lip and natural eyeshadows can go a long way for a casual party. Also, try wearing a full sized purse rather then a small clutch – this is another way to keep your look cool and casual.
