Beauty Tips & Trends | Keep Your Hair Healthy This Winter

The snow might look pretty, and you might appreciate a chill December morning, but the winter weather can wreak some serious damage on hair. Keep your mane healthy all season with these helpful tips.

Cover Up

Protect your hair from the elements the same way you protect the rest of your body: Cover up. Before venturing outdoors, tie your hair back under a hat, slipping a loose silk scarf beneath your favourite beanie to protect your hair against the fabric. Not only will it deter dreaded hat head, it helps tame pesky flyaways. If you don’t have the scarf, rubbing a dryer sheet over hair works just as well.

Dry Your Hair Completely

Leaving the house with damp hair is never a good idea, especially in the dead of winter. Wet hair is vulnerable to the decreasing temperature. Cold air causes things to expand, which results in broken hair shafts. In addition to risking increased breakage, this makes your hair colour fade faster. We won’t pretend it’s fun to blow dry hair, but your hair will thank you for it.

Wash Your Hair Less

Cut down on the number of times you shampoo your hair each week to keep your hair from drying out. Two to three times a week is recommended, but if you must shampoo more often, use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. It’ll keep your scalp from itching, flaking, and drying out.

Hydrate with Oil

Whether it’s coconut or olive, oil is a saving grace healthy, shiny, strong hair. Warm up a bit of olive oil and massage it directly onto your scalp, rinsing out after. Not only will you improve blood circulation, your hair will get additional much needed nourishment. Dry hair gets worse in the winter, but oil locks in moisture.

Maintain Moisture

There’s a definite theme for healthy winter hair: Moisture. Deep conditioning masks replenish and seal in moisture, which is particularly helpful as we constantly move from dry heat inside to cold air outside. They also combat static electricity and condition hair. Implement weekly treatments to keep your hair hydrated.
