Tips & Trends | The Coats are Coming

It’s official friends, we have entered my absolute favourite time of year. While my rationale for this is in part due to the fact that I can finally order Peppermint Mochas at Starbucks, the bigger reason is coats. That’s it, cue end of blog post.

KIDDING. I could never pass up the opportunity to ramble on about how my unhealthy love for coats is especially rampant from mid-October to mid-November (I really do have this down to a science).

Don’t get me wrong. I am absolutely not a fan of the sixth-grade, multicoloured Columbia ski jackets that are necessary for -30 degree weather and snow sports participation (for those who dare venture out into nature during the winter months). Nor am I particularly fond of the somewhat-stylish but mainly functional fur-hooded parkas worn by people who are too fancy for ski jackets (guilty as charged). These coats are to stay warm, not to look good.

The object of my coat obsession is, as you may have guessed, the wool coat. Such versatility! Such elegance! Such simplicity! For the aforementioned 30 day span that I am able to sport a wool coat without catching hypothermia, my daily outfit selection reaches optimal ease.

The best part about wearing a wool coat is your instant ability to make any outfit look classier. One of my favourite looks lately has been rocking my grey wool coat with a hoodie and jeans underneath, accessorized with a cute beanie and a trendy pair of sneakers. It’s such a simple, streetwear-inspired look for school or running errands that still gives off the illusion that you put some effort into your ensemble.

To create your own version of this look, the Grey Open Coat with Belt by Burberry is now available on the Designer Swap website! There are a few things that I really love about this beautiful piece. For starters, it’s the perfect smoky grey colour. As a practical shopper, I always aim for neutral colours to ensure that I can wear outerwear as often as possible: on that front, this jacket passes with flying colours.

I also appreciate the length of this particular wool jacket. A below-the-knee cut allows you to hide inside of the coat in cold weather or wear it open to show off your kicking outfit underneath. In my opinion, the longer the coat, the better. This Burberry showstopper also features a unique belt detailing that cinches the waist for a universally flattering silhouette.

This is a Public Service Announcement; colder weather is quickly approaching. The snowstorms will show their ugly teeth, and parka season will commence. My advice to you? Take advantage of these milder temperatures and go pick up your new favourite coat (of the wool variety)!
