What to Wear: Thanksgiving 2019

You’ll find yourself making a few tough decisions this Thanksgiving—like whether you should have a slice of apple pie or pumpkin (both is the answer)—but your outfit shouldn’t be one of them.

We’ve laid out the best outfits to wear this Thanksgiving Monday, whether you’re attending your own family dinner or someone else’s.

Your Friendsgiving Dinner

The friends’ Thanksgiving dinner is the most relaxed in terms of wardrobe choice, unless of course, you’re trying to impress a certain friend. Here, the motto is good food and good company. You won’t get any kickback from guests about ripped jeans or a casual sweater.

Your best outfit choice is one that flatters you and makes you feel good. Pair a corduroy skirt with a black turtleneck, or wear high waisted jeans and a cable knit sweater in seasonal colours.

Your Parent’s Family Dinner

Choosing what to wear to your own family dinner is the second easiest event to dress for. After all, these are the people who raised you.

The formality of your family gatherings dictates how formal you should dress. The family Thanksgiving dinner may be a super casual affair, where everyone wears jeans and fall sweaters. In this case, we recommend kick flare jeans with a dark patterned blouse and ankle boots.

Perhaps your family dinners are dressier affairs, where a camel coloured skirt with nylons and a blouse is a more appropriate fit.

Luckily, at the end of the day, there’s no need to worry too much about your outfit choice. It’s all family!

Your Significant Other’s Family Dinner

Dressing for your partner’s family dinner can be really tough or really easy. A good rule of thumb when deciding what to wear is to consider how long you’ve been dating this person—in addition to your own personal comfort level.

If you’ve been dating under three months, it doesn’t hurt to err on the side of caution and wear a nice blouse and trousers. If you’ve been dating for over two years, you’ve seen enough Thanksgivings to know your audience and can dress similarly to them.

If you’re still undecided, remember it’s always better to dress up—you don’t want to show up in jeans and a flannel while everyone else is in slacks and crewnecks.

Before you head out for dinner, wrap a light fall scarf around your neck. A silk scarf, like this Aquascutum of London scarf, is the perfect addition to your outfit, adding a chic final touch to your Thanksgiving ensemble. Find this, and more designer accessories for less at Designer Swap.
