Tips & Trends | The Sneaker Takeover

With the pandemonium that was American Thanksgiving taking place just days ago, let’s take a moment to discuss what we’re thankful for (other than Black Friday deals)! Other than the obvious answers like family, friends, food, shelter…(North America is a pretty rockin’ place to live), I am extremely thankful that I live in an era that finds it acceptable to wear sneakers with a dress. Thank you, athleisure gods!

To some, this may seem trivial: but street-inspired footwear is thriving in a way that I have never seen in my lifetime. When I was a kid, sneakers were commonly referred to as “running shoes,” and they were only an appropriate footwear choice during P.E. By eighth grade, wearing any type of laced shoes with jeans was a major fashion faux-pas.

Flash forward to 2018 and it’s a whole different ball game. People are paying thousands of dollars for limited edition Jordan’s, and camping out for hours on end to get their hands on the latest pair of Yeezy’s. While this sneaker culture can definitely be mainly attributed to the likes of men, us gals are starting to picking up on a trend that can make any outfit ten times cooler (and keep our toes comfy).

I like sneakers because I can buy one pair of all-white Nike Air Force 1’s and wear them with absolutely everything I own. I love that my feet never ache after a long day of regretting those new heels. I still get giddy when someone acknowledges a rare pair of sneakers that took me months to track down.

Speaking of rare, if it’s luxury sneakers you’re after, Designer Swap is the place to find them. These Balenciaga Race Sneakers take colour blocking to the next level with a shoe that I can only describe as something I would expect to find in outer space.

Their modern silhouette is equal parts sophistication and simplicity, but the devil is in the details. A black patent heel and honeycomb toe add a level of interest that is unrivalled by the common sneaker. The red band along the top of the shoe completes the look with a pop of colour that is timelessly fun.

Now, back to the whole “wearing sneakers with dresses” concept. I’m here to tell you that yes, it is possible! Seriously, a chunky pair of dad-style sneakers can liven up your favourite bodycon dress (next time it’s not -15 degrees outside, of course). Some trendsetting boss babes are even rocking trendy sneaks with business formal work ensembles. Trust me, you’ll thank me for this someday.

The bottom line is that the best rule for sneaker-wearing is that there are no rules. So hop on the wave, your feet will thank you!
